From Emergency First Aid to Employment Law, VAS offers a range of training courses for the local voluntary sector.

All the training courses we offer are detailed below. We can also arrange training ad hoc, and may be able to travel to you if required. Please email training@vas-swindon.org or call us on 01793 538398 to discuss this.

Please note, should you require a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health certificate, this can be arranged for an additional cost.

Leadership Skills for Community Organisations

All community organisations, no matter their size or budget, require effective leadership to achieve their purposes, aims and outcomes. Leadership wisdom doesn’t appear overnight, however, many skills that leaders use are transferable from other life settings and depend on a foundation of effective communication. Leaders need to communicate ideas, confidence and passion to their team and to their membership in order to achieve improved outcomes. These workshops will move through several stages of leadership development from personal motivation, through building confidence to dealing with conflict.

Course Aims:

  • what leadership means for trustees in community organisations – turning vision into action.
  • To discuss issues facing community leaders in Swindon – sharing solutions from leaders’ own experience
  • To teach new skills to support resilient leadership – overcoming obstacles

Course outcomes:
By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Developed a better understanding of themselves as leaders/trustees
  • Become more confident about saying the things they need to say as leaders/trustees
  • Acquired some conflict management skills to use in leadership roles

These workshops will be delivered as a series of 3 interlinked sessions over 3 months, however it is possible for participants to attend any session as a standalone workshop.

Equality and Diversity Training

What do you know about equality and diversity – and how they relate to your group, charity or voluntary organisation?

About this Event
There are good reasons – legal, moral and commercial – to make sure you get it right. The course will help you understand basic principles of equality, and how to embed them in your organisation and day-to-day work.

The workshop is suitable for staff and volunteers, irrespective of experience or seniority.

Course Aims:

  • To explore the meaning of equality, diversity and inclusion
  • To introduce The Equality Act 2010 and the equality duties it sets out
  • To look at and discuss the language we use and ways we talk about people with protected characteristics
  • To discuss the importance of equality issues for your organisation and its effectiveness

Course Outcomes:
By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Developed a better understanding of the meaning of and issues surrounding equality and diversity
  • Considered the basic principles of equality, and how they can be embedded in our organisations as well as our day-to-day work
  • Discussed the 9 protected characteristics and 8 types of discrimination

Fire Safety (Level 2)

Who is this course for?
The responsible person (usually the employer, owner or occupier) to carry out a fire safety risk assessment, implement appropriate fire precautionary and protection measures and to maintain a fire management plan.

Course overview
Provides essential knowledge about fire safety. General fire safety in England and Wales is maintained through compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The legislation implements a risk-based approach to fire safety in community, industrial and business premises. All members of staff have a role to play in fire safety and the fire safety qualifications support these various roles.

This course is half day duration. Course fee is £45.

On completion a certificate will be issued. This course is delivered by a qualified trainer registered with Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Food Safety (Foundation Certificate – Level 2)

The Food Safety course is designed for anyone working in a food business. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to prepare and cook food that is safe for consumption.

Who is this course for?
Food handlers preparing or cooking food for consumers
Anyone wishing to refresh previously learned skills and knowledge
Businesses looking to provide staff development to food employees
Self-employed, food-based small business owners

Course overview
This course reinforces the importance of food safety and provides learners with an understanding of how to identify and control food safety hazards in their own workplace.

  • Offers the minimum standards for the food safety industry
  • Builds on the Introductory Certificate in Food Safety

Health & Safety (Level 2)

With the constant changes within Health and Safety legislation, it has never been more important to ensure compliance in this field.

Who is this course for?
The responsible person (usually the employer, owner or occupier) overseeing health and safety checks.

All employers are required to have the correct systems in place to ensure a healthy and safe working environment for employees and any other people who may be affected by their business activities.

Course overview
Contravening this legislation can result in prosecution, with the possibility of an unlimited fine or even imprisonment. All employers are required to have the correct systems in place to ensure a healthy and safe working environment for employees and any other people who may be affected by their business activities.

This course is a 1 day course. Course fee is £65.

Life Support (Basic)

Rapid response to emergency situations can save lives. This course will provide basic life support to people of all ages, and can act as refresher material for those who have already completed similar training.

Who is this course for?
Our basic life support training is aimed at those who have a professional or organisational responsibility to regularly update basic life support skills for adults. Inclusive of basic paediatric CPR.

Course overview
Our course programme includes the following:

  • Recognising a casualty in a critical condition
  • The unconscious casualty
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Management of a choking casualty
  • Management to stop bleeding
  • Management of heart attacks, strokes and fitting

This course is 2 hours duration. Course fee is £35.

Lone Working

Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone who works alone and/or travels to other sites to visit clients.

Course overview
Attendees will learn how to reduce the risk to themselves, the best way to keep in contact with their place of work, and how to deal with difficult clients.

This course is half day duration. Course fee is £45.

Manual Handling (Level 2)

Manual handling injuries are the main cause of lost working days in the UK. This training will look at how to prevent back injuries.

Who is this course for?
All employees. In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and subsequent regulations, it is the responsibility of all employers to provide employees with sufficient information and training on manual handling. Injuries occur due to sprains and strains resulting from the incorrect lifting and movement of objects.

This course is half day duration. Course fee is £45.

On completion a certificate will be issued. This course is delivered by a qualified trainer registered with Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

First Aid at Work (Foundation Certificate – Level 2)

Make sure you are able to respond confidently to a range of first aid incidents and emergencies. The First Aid at Work course will teach you the skills, knowledge to give emergency first aid in a low-risk work environment.

Who is this course for?
Anyone aged 16 and over, who works in a low hazard, low-risk environment such as an office or shop premises
Anyone aged 16 and over in full- or part-time education wishing to learn about first aid

Course overview
This course will develop your knowledge of how to administer first aid to people in need.

Key facts

  • Learn the responsibilities of first aiders, including how to contact and talk to emergency services.
  • Identify emergency first aid situations, including how to deliver assistance.
  • Learn how to recognise, assess and administer first aid for a wide range of illnesses, incidents and injuries
  • Delivered over 1 day with a minimum of 6 hours contact time.
  • Find out about first aid legislation
  • Cover skills such as minimising infection, establishing consciousness and how to treat various illnesses and injuries.

This course is 1 day duration. Course fee is £85.

First Aid at Work (Intermediate Certificate – Level 3)

This First Aid at Work course pushes your first aid skills, knowledge and understanding even further.

Who is this course for?
Anyone wishing to be the designated first aider in the workplace
Anyone wanting to further develop skills and advance from the Foundation Certificate in First Aid at Work (Level 2)

Course overview
Following this course, you’ll be able to provide care for life-threatening conditions, minor illness and injuries in higher risk environments, until emergency help arrives.

Key facts

  • Know the legal requirements for First Aid at Work
  • Recognise vital signs and illnesses such as burns, sudden poisoning, heart attacks and stroke.
  • This course allows you to become the designated first aider in your workplace.

This course is 2 days duration. Course fee is £165.

On completion a certificate will be issued. This course is delivered by a qualified trainer registered with Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
