Volunteer Centre Swindon: Helping Hands

Volunteers are the life blood of many organisations that help support local communities in and around Swindon. Volunteer Centre Swindon (registered charity no. 1078012) are launching a new project to make a lasting difference to the community.

Many organisations struggle to deliver services and activities that support the needy and disadvantaged because they do not have enough volunteers to help them.

The Volunteer Centre’s Helping Hands project will help address this. The project will involve working with local people to encourage and support them into giving their time to their local community. It could be through befriending an older person, helping at a lunch club, mentoring a young person, helping a disabled person enjoy activities or helping at an environmental project.

Through undertaking volunteering people gain skills, become more employable, have improved confidence, make new friends and feel more engaged with their communities.

The Volunteer Centre also plan to undertake regular outreach sessions to promote the project and encourage involvement in local causes. These will take place in local community centres, libraries and at local events.

The Volunteer Centre will work with local organisations to help them develop their volunteering opportunities and offer training sessions to help them better manage their volunteers.

The Volunteer Centre currently does not have the funds to undertake this much needed work and support from the Aviva Community Fund will make all the difference.
