New Community Centres Network a Success
12th January saw Swindon’s volunteer-run Community Centres come together at the VAS building in the town centre to exchange ideas and get to know each other better. 24 people attended this first meeting of Swindon’s new Community Centres Network, including representatives from community centres in Eastcott, Buckhurst, Highworth, Nythe, Toothill, Lawn and Park South. Other attendees were from Grange Leisure Centre, Swindon Borough Council, and the Volunteer Centre.
It was a very lively couple of hours with conversations flowing. It was great to share the success many are having in growing the use of their centre and meeting the needs of their communities. Matters of common interest included how to recruit more management volunteers, complying with legislation (particularly employment law and licencing), and how to generate enough income to care for ageing buildings! Everyone had plenty to say to each other and reported that they had enjoyed it and found it useful.
Those present agreed they will carry on meeting quarterly as an informal network and hope other centres will join in too. Sessions will last around 2 hours on varying days & times to accommodate. Each session will have a particular topic of interest and plenty of time to network.
Next date is Thursday 21st April 2016, 1pm-3pm for the Community Centres Network to meet again at the Voluntary Action Swindon building, 1 John Street, SN1 1RT.
